23) April 29, 1916 - British Forces Surrender at Kut-al-Amara

In April 1916, the British military would witness the largest surrender of its troops to that time. On April 29, around 13,000 soldiers led by commander Sir Charles Townshend surrendered to the Turkish and German troops in the town of Kut-al-Amara in modern-day Iraq. They withstood almost five months of constant siege by the Central Powers. Before this day, the British had enjoyed great success in Mesopotamia, occupying the province of Basra by late September and planning to move further up the Tigris onto Baghdad. They were ultimately stopped by Turkish troops at Ctesiphon a month later. To their disadvantage, the British troops were made up of mostly Indian troops that had little experience and training. Being unable to continue fighting, they retreated to Kut.
